Designing an exhibition inside the Neues Museum meant working on the interventions by David Chipperfield in the same way as the architect dealt with Friedrich Stüler’s building in 1997.
The iconic main staircase repeats the bombarded original without replicating it, and sits within a majestic hall that is preserved only as a brick volume, devoid of its original ornamentation. We choose to place our exhibition in this hall exploiting the space in height. Earrings, necklaces and rings are taken from the museum Egyptian archive and form the collection. The main idea of evoking wealth it has been interpreted as a golden rain.
The exhibition consists of steel cables hanged out on the wooden ceiling, fall onto the showcases placed on the balcony of the staircase below. The profile of the staircase above is underlined by a golden slab covering the handrail.
Standing in front of the massive staircase seems to look at a skenè of a greek theater.
The museum medium is the showcase that contains the jewel, designed as a glass casket and a diamond-shaped wooden display.
Exhibition means also the design of the entrance to the hall and interventions outside the building thought in line with the theme of the exhibition.
